Berkshire Equine or ‘BE’, is a specialist equine veterinary practice located a short distance from the stud, offering veterinary services in the south of England encompassing the Berkshire and Lambourn area.

BE provides veterinary care with a specific focus on the thoroughbred industry in stud medicine, horses in training and sales services for public auction. The practice prides itself in providing an expert, high quality service.

Set up in 2019 by Simon Knapp MRCVS and Newmarket Equine Hospital (NEH), BE continues to drive forward with enthusiasm and enjoys its fast-growing reputation. BE’s close association with NEH, the largest clinical facility in Europe, ensures our clients have access to further advanced diagnostic equipment and fully equipped laboratory as well as renowned board-certified surgeons and medical experts.

Upon completing his veterinary degree at the University of Liverpool, Luke began working at NEH within the ambulatory team. Practicing in both racing and stud medicine, under the tutelage of some of the most respected stud and racing vets in the UK, within large thoroughbred racing yards and stud farms in Newmarket.

Luke has undertaken multiple southern hemisphere seasons in New Zealand, working for large thoroughbred studs as a resident vet. He developed a passion for stud work and gained invaluable experience with routine breeding of mares, issues associated with stallions and neonatal care. On his return to the UK, Luke relocated from NEH to join the team at BE. Having a keen interest in all aspects of thoroughbred practice, Luke has developed considerable skill and interest in stud medicine (including foetal sexing) as well as sales work involving routine sales x-rays, video-endoscopy and pre-purchase sales examinations.

Our farriers Nathan Appleton and Jason Maguire are recognized leaders in their field. Our farrier is one of the most important members of the team.

All foals are monitored from their very first steps. It is a crucial element to a young horse’s life that their conformation will enable them to become the athletes on the racetrack.

From your foal’s early days, through to weanling and yearling stages, their conformation is observed and we document and record all of the minor details on to our database for any future information.
